Effect of vocal loudness variation on the voice source

چکیده

The physiological correlate of perceived vocal loudness is the overpressure of air under the glottis, or the subglottal pressure Psub. Variation of vocal loudness, i.e., of Psub has strong effects on the waveform of the transglottal airflow, also called the voice source. As the voice source is the primary sound itself, which after filtering by the vocal tract resonator is radiated through the lip opening, variation of Psub has strong effects on the voice timbre. The waveform of the voice source , called the flow glottogram, can be obtained by inverse filtering, which implies that the vocal sound is filtered by the inverted frequency curve of the vocal tract. A flow glottogram is characterized by triangular air pulses, occurring when the vocal folds open the glottis and allows an airstream to pass. These air pulses are interleaved by episodes of zero airflow occurring when the vocal folds close the glottis, arresting the air stream. Important flow glottogram characteristics are (1) the relative duration of the closed phase, or Qclosed, (2) the peak amplitude of the flow pulse and (3) the maximum flow declination rate corresponding to the steepness of the trailing end of the flow pulse. These voice source characteristics show a reasonably simple relationship to acoustic properties of vocal sounds. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the flow pulse is strongly correlated with the amplitude of the lowest spectrum partial, the fundamental. The maximum flow declination rate determines the sound level and Qclosed is strongly correlated with the dominance of the fundamental in the spectrum. When Psub is increased from very low to low, Qclosed increases markedly, but an increase from a high to a very high Psub does not affect Qclosed appreciably. An increase of Psub also leads to an increase of maximum flow declination rate and generally also of the peakto-peak amplitude. Another consequence of an increased Psub is that the higher partials in the spectrum gain more in sound level than the lower partials. Thus, a 10 dB increase of the overall sound level of a vowel is typically accompanied by a 15 dB increase of the partials near 300 Hz. This means that the slope of the spectrum, and hence also of a long-term-average spectrum varies with. All these effects of Psub variation on the voice source imply that comparisons of acoustic spectrum characteristics of a voice, e.g., before and after treatment, must be made for the same degree of vocal loudness. If this condition is not met, the effect of the loudness difference between the recordings compared must be compensated for. The Effect of Vocal Loudness on Nasalance of Vowels in Persian Adults

Objectives: Nasality is one of the important parameters in pathology of voice resonance. Voice of normal adults has nasality to some extent. It appears that nasality, like other parameters of voice, can be affected by loudness which can be measured in experimental evaluations. This study was conducted to determine the effect of vocal loudness on nasalance of vowels in normal adults and to ident...

The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Improves Vocal loudness in Early Persian Parkinson’s Patients: A Pilot Study

Objectives: In the early stages, most Parkinson’s patients display some degrees of voice and speech disorders. Speech disorders can negatively affect social interactions and human life, thus treatment plans for the disorders in the early stages might be further beneficial than the late stages. Therefore, we aimed to investigate on the effect of an intervention on Persian patients with early mil...

Phonatory control in male singing: a study of the effects of subglottal pressure, fundamental frequency, and mode of phonation on the voice source.

This article describes experiments carried out in order to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying variation of vocal loudness in singers. Ten singers, two of whom are famous professional opera tenor soloists, phonated at different pitches and different loudnesses. Their voice source characteristics were analyzed by inverse filtering the oral airflow signal. It was found that t...

Effect on LTAS of vocal loudness variation.

Long-term-average spectrum (LTAS) is an efficient method for voice analysis, revealing both voice source and formant characteristics. However, the LTAS contour is non-uniformly affected by vocal loudness. This variation was analyzed in 15 male and 16 female untrained voices reading a text 7 times at different degrees of vocal loudness, mean change in overall equivalent sound level (Leq) amounti...

Subglottal pressure and NAQ variation in voice production of classically trained baritone singers

The subglottal pressure (Ps) and voice source characteristics of five professional baritone singers were analyzed. Glottal adduction was estimated with amplitude quotient (AQ), defined as the ratio between peak-to-peak pulse amplitude and the negative peak of the differentiated flow glottogram, and with normalized amplitude quotient (NAQ), defined as AQ divided by fundamental period length. Pre...
